Hotels Durban

Durban is one of the busiest cities in the province of KwaZuluNatal and is a holiday maker’s paradise, with year round sunshine and some of the best hotels in the province. The city is often likened to Miami Beach in Florida and is a great place to head to if you’re a night owl who enjoys clubs bars and restaurants. Durban is also a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, and activities like surfing, body boarding, sailing and scuba diving are all hugely popular with both locals and visitors alike. The beach front is lined with 5 star hotels so if it’s luxury accommodation you’re looking for you’ll find it in abundance in Durban. Away from the beach some of the most popular attractions include the Victoria Street market, which is a huge indoor market selling everything from spices to beautiful Indian silks, the Durban Natural Science Museum, the Greyville Racecourse, and the Durban Botanical gardens. You’ll also find plenty of fantastic restaurants serving every kind of food imaginable.

The nearest airport is King Shaka International, which replaced Durban International in May 2010 as the main airport serving the city. It’s located at La Mercy approximately 35 km north of the city and is a modern, efficient airport. King Shaka connects Durban with the other main cities in South Africa and also operates a number of international flights, including flights to Mauritius and Dubai.

As mentioned, Durban hotels are some of the best in the country, and if you really want to splash out and treat yourself, you’ll have your pick of five star hotels and luxury self catering apartments to choose from. One of the city’s newest additions to the five star family is the Endless Horizons Boutique Hotel, which is situated to the north of the city on Umhlanga Rocks Drive. It is very tastefully decorated with antique Chinese, Thai and Indonesian artworks interspersed with more modern pieces, and every facility imaginable is available, including computer links by the pool area. The hotel is very much geared towards the business guests so may not be the ideal place to head if you’re looking for a holiday atmosphere, but for sheer luxury it’s hard to beat and is worth checking out if you’d like to treat yourself for a night or two!

One of the more affordable Durban hotels is the Blue Waters Hotel, which is right on the beachfront and perfect for a family holiday as children of all ages are welcome. It’s also less than ten minutes walk from the city centre so if you fancy getting a break from the beach, you won’t be far from the rest of the action in this bustling city. The hotel has its own restaurant and you can also enjoy afternoon tea in the Florida Lounge, which overlooks the Indian Ocean. There’s also a cocktail bar, which overlooks the pool, a squash court, sauna and in-house hairdressing salon. The hotel’s staff are super-friendly and will do all they can to make sure your stay is as pleasant and relaxing as possible.

If you’d prefer to stay in apartment style accommodation along the beach, then take a look at the luxury Belaire Suites located between Battery and North beaches. The Belaire offers self contained apartments in a hotel suite environment and there are 127 altogether, from studio suites to three bedroom apartments suitable for a family. Each one has fantastic views of the Indian ocean and they are all very tastefully decorated with marble bathrooms. The kitchenettes are equipped with tea and coffee making facilities, a microwave, toaster and basic cutlery and crockery, so you can make yourself a simple snack during the day. When it’s time for something a bit more hearty, Cafe Jiran, which is located on the ground floor of Belaire Suites is a continental style bistro serving a range of European and Asian dishes made from the finest fresh ingredients. And if you’re a coffee lover you’ll be delighted to hear that Cafe Jiran is rated in the top three in Durban when it comes to making cappuccino!
